Mother’s Day Gifts

You don’t have a Mother’s Day gift, yet? Don’t worry! Yeah, how many times have you heard that…

How about – here is another gift idea. Come to Mango Street and you can knock out your gift shopping, save some money AND save a Sunday afternoon trip to the mall. Don’t quite understand? Well, you have two choices:

The first is a great chance to view unique (just like Mom) jewelry by local artist at an exclusive trunk show on Friday, May 9 at our Saddle Creek location. It is a great chance to support local artists while getting Mom a fantastic gift that lets her know you think she is your diamond in the rough… You can bring Mom in and let her choose a few pieces that she likes, then surprise her with your own choice!

The second choice is a team effort. Mango Street Baby has partnered with well known photographer Allison Rodgers to offer some special gift packages for Mango babies and Moms. Packages will be a combination of gift certificates from Mango Street and Allison Rodgers Photography. You can use your Allison Rodgers gift certificates for studio or location shoots.

All packages come wrapped and ready for presenting the perfect gift.

Choose from packages starting at $150.
$150: $50 Mango Street/$100 Allison Rodgers Photography
$200: $50 Mango Street/$150 Allison Rodgers Photography
$300: $100 Mango Street/$200 Allison Rodgers Photography
$500: $200 Mango Street/$300 Allison Rodgers Photography

What To Bring With You – Phil & Ted’s T2 Cot

So, we are working on the list of great things to do with your kids. Feel free to add your suggestions HERE. But what should you be sure and take with you? Here is my first suggestion, The Phil & Ted T2 Travel Cot.

First, you gotta see it. I was more impressed by how cool it looked than any features! But, low and behold, it has some great features that make it almost impossible to leave at home if you are spending any time outside.

Enough of the pictures, here are some details..

It weighs 6 pounds and folds up in a carry bag that measures 7″ around and 22″ long. That could be smaller than the baby that goes in it!

When assembled, it is 20″ wide x 28″ long x 48″ high. Plenty of room for an afternoon nap or even a space to play while mom and dad enjoy Sunset Symphony at Tom Lee Park! It comes with a self-inflating, thermarest mattress, UV shaded cover with storage pocket, four stakes to secure the travel cot, and a protective travel bag. The T2 is tough, washable, waterproof and the unique mesh offers 80UV protection while keeping the bugs out.

The travel cot can be used for children up to three years old.

Available here in Memphis at Mango Street Baby in Blue and Red – just in time for all the Memphis in May activities!

OuttaTheHouse Suggestions!

With spring blowing in, and not a minute too soon, it is time to pack up the kids and the sunscreen and head outside!

There are so many great things to do in Memphis – most don’t even really cost any money. So, I have started a list here with some things to do, starting in May and lasting all summer long. Share your ideas and comments here with other Dads so everyone will know what is going on!

Memphis Zoo

(kids under 2 are free, kids 2-12 are $8.00, adults and kids 12 and up – $13.00) Family membership is $79.00. You get a season pass for two adults and two children under 21, free parking and some other great benefits.

Peabody Ducks

Free, unless you have to pay for parking.

Cooper Young Water Park

Free, and free parking! Great for hot summer days.

Shelby Farms

Pack a lunch or afternoon snack. Take the stroller and walk around Patriot Lake – teach the kids about the geese and ducks and horses and dogs… It’s all free!

Mud Island Park and the Mississippi River Museum

Fantastic downtown park that teaches kids, and some of us adults, about the history of the Lower Mississippi River Valley. Kids 4 and under are free, ages 5-11 $5.00, Adults – $8.00.

Wolf River Nature Area

This stretch along the south side of the Wolf River has picnic areas and rest rooms! Oh yeah, parking is free. There are also some places to stop along your walk to learn about the wildlife in and around the area.

Rock-n-Romp

An all ages music show for kids and parents. Great fun and great time to meet other parents in the area! A small donation for each parent is requested, but not required – but you really should pay your $5 and then buy a t-shirt for you and your kid(s). Plus, there is a keg of adult beverage…

The BOB Stroller post

There are A LOT of strollers out there. They do A LOT of different things. Some fold up really small, some wind through the smallest store aisles, some fold up small enough to carry on your flight to Cabo San Lucas… I have had the chance to use quite a few strollers and will try to impart some of that knowledge and experience to you beginning with this post!

I like to run and I have tried out a few running strollers. Okay, more than a few. Let me tell you about my experience with three different BOB strollers: The Ironman stroller, the Revolution stroller, and the Duallie Revolution stroller.

Ironman B.O.B. Stroller

This is first and foremost a running stroller. It is light (21 lbs.), with narrow 16-inch wheels. The wheels roll very easy and the front wheel is fixed, which also helps reduce rolling resistance. The seat is very comfortable for your kid and even reclines if your run gets VERY long and they want to snooze (technically reclines up to 70°). There are two pockets in the seat to put cereal, snacks, or maybe even a sippie cup. There is also a lower gear pocket and pocket on the back of the seat to place your gear if you need immediate stowing abilities. The seat straps are very easy to use and are padded so it is comfortable. The five point safety harness is also very safe.

The padded push bar is very comfortable and the brake can be adjusted up or down to suit your needs. The shocks are pretty stiff and the tires are made for road running so they roll very easily – the ride is very smooth.

As far as portability, the Ironman folds up with a quick, two step folding motion. The stroller doesn’t fold up very small but I didn’t find this to be a real problem. I have found that with other strollers, the smaller they fold up, the less stable they seem to be – for the most part. In this case, stability is much more important than folding up really small. The Ironman stroller will carry your child all they way up to 70 pounds. (Seriously, if you are training for a marathon or an Ironman and pushing around a 60 pound child – my hat’s off you!) Plus, it works great when you’re not running and just need a good stroller.

It comes in two colors, yellow and navy.

Gripes: I only have one real gripe – the lack of height adjustability on the push bar. I am 6’1” and the push bar is just barely too low to be comfortable. I got used to it and it wasn’t a terrible issue, but it would be nice to have the option to raise (or lower) if needed.

Yellow Ironman Stroller

Revolution/Duallie Revolution B.O.B. Stroller

This stroller works great as a running stroller and an everyday stroller. The basic features on the Revolution are identical to the Ironman stroller. Child cockpit and safety features are the same. Storage options are also the same. The most important feature that is different is the pivoting front wheel. The Revolution gives you the ability to lock the front wheel or let it swivel for very easy turning and maneuvering through the grocery store or mall or wine store… Locking the front wheel gives you the option of using the Revolution as a running stroller and helps provide stability when traveling over rough terrain.

Overall, I didn’t notice much of a difference in the Ironman stroller and the Revolution on shorter runs (3 o five miles). It is an obvious place to note that there was a bigger difference with the Duallie and two kids, but I don’t think it had anything to do with rolling resistance or the locking wheel! The single Revolution is heavier than the Ironman (2 pounds heavier) and the rolling resistance isn’t as efficient as the Ironman, but it certainly gets the job done. I have noticed that on long walks, I like the Revolution and the Duallie because of the pivoting front wheel. That being said, the Revolution is more versatile than the Ironman because of the front wheel. It steers VERY easily, is very stable and strong. The Revolution and Duallie fold up the same way the Ironman stroller folds.

The Revolution comes in a variety of colors: Navy/Cool Gray, Chocolate Brown/Pink, Mesa Orange/Chocolate, Chocolate/Blue, and Black/Camel.

The Duallie comes in Navy/Cool Gray and Mesa Orange/Chocolate.

Gripes: I really don’t have any real gripes about the Revolution or the Duallie stroller. I wouldn’t buy it if you are looking for a running stroller to take on long runs – but if you are looking for a versatile stroller that you can take on shorter runs and a comfortable stroller to take everywhere, the Revolution is the way to go.

Orange Revolution Blue Duallie

Accessories for both strollers: You can get a car seat adapter for all BOB strollers. I highly recommend it for younger children! They are fairly easy to install and work very well. I would also suggest the warm fuzzy and the weather cover. I know my daughter LOVED to run in the rain – and having the warm fuzzy and the weather cover made me get out and run!

Here We Go!

This is a shout out to all the Dads out there! Of course, it won’t be the last…

Although there has to be some sort of structure here, we are going to open this thing up to whatever we need. My name is Chris. I have two kids. The folks at Mango Street thought it would be nice to reach out and make a place for Dads to talk, brag, compare gear and products, and share war stories…

This can be a place where you can ask questions, get help with gear and furniture questions… I will go ahead and say that I don’t know much about which pillows go with which bed, but it turns out that I know someone who can help with those questions, should you need some help!

So, check back often, comment as much as you want and RSS this site so you know when it is updated.

See you soon – peace

Chris
